There are many styles that will suit every face shape and fashion changes constantly.
The following information contains the most important aspects of a good style for your face
shape.
A round face is one that looks almost as long as it is wide and has full cheeks.
Characteristics of a Good Style:
- Styles that visually lengthen your face.
- Styles that add moderate height to the top of the head and temples to balance the width of the cheeks.
- If a part is desired, a diagonal, three quarter or centre front part is good.
- Medium to long length with some tapering in the back.
- Keep your hair off your face and close in at the sides.
- A diagonal fringe (bang) is a great way to add length and interest to a round face.
Avoid:
- ‘Roundish’ hairstyles.
- Straight fringes, especially those that are heavy.
- Fullness at the ear line.
- Very short hair that follows the roundness of the face.

Here is a sample of what hair styles look great:
The Right Short Hairstyle: This hairstyle adds height and makes our round models face appear longer than it actually is. People with round faces need to add height not width, which is exactly what this hairstyle does.
The Wrong Short Hairstyle: This hairstyle makes our round models face appear even rounder and wider. The bangs make the face shorter while the sides that kick out once again promote width. This is a good example of what not to wear.
The Right Medium Hairstyle: This hairstyle gives the appearance of an oval shape. The sides pulled back behind the ears help slim the face down, while no bangs show off more forehead and therefore a longer shape. The off centre part helps divide the face evenly making it also appear longer rather than wider. It's a nice look!
The Wrong Medium Hairstyle: This example shows how adding width rather than length to round face shapes is disastrous. The bangs shorten the face while the hair that kicks out at chin length only accentuates width and roundness. This is a nice hairstyle but is definitely not good for round face shapes.
The Right Long Hairstyle: This soft layered look is fabulous for our models round face shape. The middle part helps divide her face into two longer portions while the absence of bangs doesn't compromise any vertical length. Straight hair would actually be more suitable and slimmer in design but this example shows a good indication of how shape is everything in hairstyle design.
The Wrong Long Hairstyle: This hairstyle shows how a round hairstyle and a round face really don't complement each other. Although having this much volume at the crown can sometimes be a good thing, this style adds width to the sides which makes the face appear larger and incredibly round. The bangs are a nice touch but cover the face up too much. It is a lovely hairstyle but it is just not suited to a round face shape.
Eye Wear
- To make your face look longer and slimmer, select frames that are slightly angular and narrow
- Your frames should always be wider than they are deep.
- High or mid-height temples help to create a longer profile.
- Styles that sweep at the sides are very slimming.
- The frames will also have to be sized in proportion to your head. A woman who has a small head size will need smaller frames for balance and vice versa.
- A clear bridge widens the eyes and coloured temples add width.
- A low bridge will shorten a long nose and a high bridge will lengthen a short nose.
- Update your glasses every two to three years with a current style.
- Do not wear obvious bifocals with a line, they make you look out of style and out-of-date. Ask for no-line progressive lenses.
Make-up
- The objective is to create more definition. The forehead and the jaw line need to appear narrower.
- A basic rule to be remembered when applying foundation, blush or eye shadow is that light advances and dark recedes.
- Apply the darker shades to areas that need to be visually diminished and the lighter shades to areas that need to be advanced.
- Apply a darker shade of foundation in the arc on either side of the forehead.
- Apply a darker shade of foundation on either side of the jaw up to the tip of the ear.
- Apply blush under the ball of the cheek beginning at the point just outside the centre of the eye. Extend to the temples.
I highly recommend to book yourself into a Make Up Workshop or Make Up Lesson with a Professional Make Up Artist as she will teach you what works for you and what doesn't. What colours are great on you and which aren't so great. I personally work with Rozlyne Vidal (check out her website on www.rozlynevidal.com) and her next workshop with a focus on Eye Make Up Application is coming up on the 2nd of June in Engadine. Earrings:
Look for earrings that are longer than they are wide to slim the face.
The best shapes include:
- Tear drops
- Hoops
- Drops
- Ovals
- Rectangles
Hats:
- Select a hat with a rising crown to lengthen the face
- Asymmetric or uplifting brims will add length to the face.
- Look for accessories that will add vertical design to the hat e.g. Feathers.
- Take your body's scale into account when selecting how wide your brim is to be. Don't get caught looking like a mushroom.
- The best width is never wider than your shoulders.
