There are many styles that will suit every face shape and fashion changes constantly.
The following information contains the most important aspects of a good style for your face
shape.
A square face is one that looks almost as long as it is wide and has a broad shallow jawline.
It is also a face shape that becomes round with weight gain.
Your Goal is to look for hair styles that visually lengthen your face and soften your jaw line (if desired).
Characteristics of a Good Style:
- Add volume to the hair in the area of the eyes and the top of the crown away from the jaw line.
- Create the illusion of height to offset the squareness with unbalanced lines. Curve and angle hair across the forehead.
- Natural looking soft styles are essential to soften your face shape.
- Styles with broken or asymmetric lines.
- Hair longer than the ears should be kept close to the face.
- Styles longer than the chin should have curves to soften the jaw line.
- Avoid showing too much or too little forehead.
- An off centre part with a swept to the side fringe.
- Hair close at the ears to emphasise cheekbones.
- Hair a bit longer in the back to lengthen the face.
Avoid:
- Too much fullness at the ears.
- Straight fringes, especially those that are heavy.
- Centre parts (makes jaw look squarer).

Here is a sample of what hair styles look great:
The Right Short Hairstyle: This short concave bob is a great looking hairstyle for our models square face shape. The sides falling forward soften the jaw line, while the falling across diagonal bangs also are ideal for minimizing squareness. The hairstyle has an overall rounded appearance making it the right choice for framing square face shapes. Other short styles that will work include looks which have soft wispy side parted swept across bangs in wavy or curly textures.
The Wrong Short Hairstyle: This short cut illustrates really well what to avoid on square face shapes. Firstly, the top area, although wispy, has a very square shape about it. Secondly, the short tapered sides accentuate the squareness coming up from the jaw line, and the square hairline only adds to what is doomed from the very start. Definitely the wrong cut for square face shapes.
The Right Medium Hairstyle: This hairstyle has all the right ingredients to suit and compliment square faces. Firstly, the sides are soft and wispy falling onto the jaw line hiding squareness. Secondly, a side part and side swept bangs help create a diagonal illusion or deception that loses any focus on squareness. The graduated sides and back angle upwards creating a whole new shape to frame this face. Other variations in different textures and slight length adjustments will also work keeping to this theme.
The Wrong Medium Hairstyle: If a picture tells a thousand words, what does this say to you? Terrible in capital letters! The shape of the cut only makes our models square face shape look even squarer. The straight across bangs shorten the length of the face, while the chin length sides create width and draw attention to the jaw area that is not needed. Even the middle part makes the entire shape appear square. This shape should be avoided.
The Right Long Hairstyle: This long wavy hairstyle with side swept bangs is just right for our models square face shape. The waves are open ended, meaning that they have curved lines that are softer to the eye, not angular ones as in straight hair. The across bangs also help to change the perception of shape to the eye making it appear rounder rather than solid or square. Other good long looks include wispy face framing layers in straight, wavy or curly textures.
The Wrong Long Hairstyle: This hairstyle looks very heavy and solid all over making it a bad choice for square face shapes. The heavy bangs create a very square shape by themselves, but once they are added to the straight one length sides and back, the result is very square and angular. The sides need layers, particularly around the face, while the bangs need to be less heavy and more across. This is a good example of the wrong cut for the wrong face shape.
Eye Wear
- A square face is characterised by a strong jaw line, a broad forehead, and a wide chin and cheekbones.
- Your best frames are those that make the face appear longer.
- Your best styles are round or oval frames with soft curves or a curved upward sweep as these will minimise the squareness of your face.
- Frames need to be more horizontal than vertical.
- Colour or ornamental engraving on the upper outer corners of the frame will lengthen your face, as will decorative temples hinged above eye level.
- Frames should be sized in proportion to your head. A woman who has a small head size will need smaller frames for balance and vice versa.
- A low bridge will shorten a long nose and a high bridge will lengthen a short nose.
- Update your glasses every two to three years with a current style.
- Do not wear obvious bifocals with a line. They make you look out of style and out-of-date. Ask for no-line progressive lenses.
Make-up
- Apply a darker shade of foundation on either side of the forehead and jaw line and blend.
- Apply a concentration of blush directly onto the ball of the cheek and blend towards the top of the ear.
I highly recommend to book yourself into a Make Up Workshop or Make Up Lesson with a Professional Make Up Artist as she will teach you what works for you and what doesn't. What colours are great on you and which aren't so great. I personally work with Rozlyne Vidal (check out her website on www.rozlynevidal.com) and her next workshop with a focus on Eye Make Up Application is coming up on the 2nd of June in Engadine.
